Canadian Vehicle Purchasing Pattern
Electric vehicle sales generally on the rise in 2020... but
not in Canada
According to EV Volume, in most countries EVs and PHEVs have been more resistant to COVID than the automotive markets in general. Global shipments of EVs and PHEVs increased by 43% over the previous year, while the global light vehicle market declined by 14%. Their global market share increased from 2.5% in 2019 to 4.2% in 2020.

- Europe: +137% EV sales compared to 2019 / General market: -20% compared to 2019
- China: +12% EV sales compared to 2019 / General market: -4% compared to 2019
- United States: +4% EV sales compared to 2019 / General market: -15% compared to 2019
- Other markets: +24% EV sales compared to 2019 / General market: -19% compared to 2019
- Canada: -7% EV sales in 2020 vs. 2019 / General market: -20% compared to 2019
- Japan: -28% EV sales compared to 2019 / General market: -11% compared to 2019
So Canada has a lot of work ahead.
Best Reasons to accelerate Electric Mobility:
Between 1990 and 2018, GHG emissions from the transport sector increased by 53% in Canada.
While emissions from cars decreased by 17%, emissions from light trucks (SUVs, pickups, minivans) increased by 150% as Canadians shifted from cars to light trucks. GHG emissions from heavy-duty freight trucks increased by 233%. In 2018, these 3 sub-sectors (cars, light trucks, heavy-duty freight trucks) accounted for 83% of Canada's total transportation GHG emissions. However, the vast majority of these light and heavy-duty vehicles are or will soon be electrifiable.
